What Is a Vintage Snapback Made Of?

To restore a hat properly, you must understand its components:

• The Buckram: The stiff, woven fabric behind the front panels that gives the crown its shape. If this is creased, the hat ‘slumps.’
• The Brim/Bill: Typically a plastic insert in the 90s (earlier 80s models used cardboard, which cannot be submerged).
• The Foam Liner: Found in ‘trucker’ styles or reinforced fronts. In vintage pieces, this often turns into a messy orange powder.

How Do You Remove Rotted Foam From a Vintage Cap?

We utilize a soft-bristle surgical brush and a micro-vacuum to remove degraded foam. This is a critical first step; if you get degraded foam wet, it becomes a permanent orange dye that will ruin the exterior wool or twill.

How Do You Reshape a Crushed Hat Crown?

We don’t use household irons. We use high-pressure, dry steam to relax the fibers of the wool or cotton. While the fibers are hot and pliable, we place the hat on a hard-wood hat block (a mold of a human head) to stretch out 30 years of ‘storage creases.‘

3. Sweatband Sanitization

Using an enzyme-based cleaner, we target ‘sweat salt’ and skin oils on the interior band. We do this by hand to ensure the cleaning agents don’t bleed into the brim or affect the ‘green under-brim’-a key aesthetic marker of the era.
