Looking After It

It's yours now. Here's how to keep it that way.

Before this left the shop it was cleaned, tested, and graded by hand. Hardware was powered on. Discs and carts were read. Apparel was inspected and de-linted. We grade the way we'd want something graded for us, and we stand behind everything we sell. So settle in and enjoy it. A few small habits will keep it good for years.

The Three Things That Age Everything

Heat, direct sunlight, and moisture do almost all the damage you'll ever see. Keep things out of a hot car, off a sunny windowsill, and away from damp basements and bathrooms. Get those three right and most of the rest takes care of itself.

By Type

  • ·Games and carts. Store cases upright like books so the spines hold. Handle discs by the edges. For cartridges, blow nothing into them; if a connection acts up, a cotton swab with a little isopropyl alcohol on the contacts does the job.
  • ·Consoles and hardware. Give them room to breathe and dust the vents now and then. If you box one up, add a silica packet and keep it off the floor. Original foam and inserts are worth saving.
  • ·Vintage apparel. Wash cold, inside out, and hang or lay flat to dry. Keep printed graphics out of the dryer so they don't crack. Fold heavy knits rather than hanging them.
  • ·Controllers, cables, and accessories. Coil cables loosely, never tight around a controller. A quick wipe of the analog sticks and buttons keeps grime from building up where it's hard to reach later.
