Quick Answer

PC Engine is one of the most collectible retro platforms, with multiple hardware variants and an exceptional library of shooters and RPGs. NOSTOS in Duluth, GA is an active buyer of PC Engine software, CD-ROM² titles included, and of hardware that's working and in excellent cosmetic condition.

PC Engine - released in Japan in 1987 by NEC - is among the most technically impressive and collectible consoles of the 8/16-bit era. In the US, it sold as the TurboGrafx-16. Collector demand in 2026 remains strong, and NOSTOS in Duluth, GA is one of the few shops in Georgia actively stocking and buying the platform.

Which PC Engine Hardware Variants Exist?

Understanding the hardware lineup is essential for collectors:

Japanese PC Engine Line

VariantNotes
PC EngineOriginal 1987 white unit. Smallest game console ever made at time of release. HuCard only.
CoreGrafx1989 revision; composite video output. Cosmetically different from original PC Engine.
CoreGrafx II1992 minor revision.
PC Engine GT1990 portable version. Battery-intensive; capacitor issues common.
SuperGrafx1989 enhanced PC Engine with additional VRAM. Only 6 exclusive games - highly collectible.
PC Engine Duo1991 combination HuCard + CD-ROM² system. First “all-in-one.”
PC Engine Duo-R1993 revised Duo - most common complete system.
PC Engine Duo-RX1994 final revision.

American TurboGrafx-16 Line

VariantNotes

TurboDuoAmerican equivalent of the PC Engine Duo-R.

What Is in the PC Engine Library?

PC Engine’s strength is in shooters and RPGs:

Shooters (HuCard)

  • R-Type - definitive home conversion
  • Gradius - better than SNES version
  • Gate of Thunder (CD) - reference quality

RPGs

  • Ys I & II (CD) - definitive 16-bit Ys experience
  • Tengai Makyou II (CD) - massive JRPG, Japan-only
  • Dungeon Explorer - action-RPG, US release

Other

  • Bonk’s Adventure - PC Engine mascot platformer
  • Street Fighter II Champion Edition - excellent port

Capacitor Issues

PC Engine hardware from 1987–1994 is now 30+ years old. The original capacitors in many units have failed or are failing. Symptoms include:

  • Audio distortion or no audio
  • Video instability or color shift
  • CD drive read failures on Duo models
  • System not powering on

NOSTOS buys PC Engine hardware that works. Consoles, handhelds and controllers have to be working and in excellent cosmetic condition, so a unit showing these symptoms isn’t one we can buy as it stands. The hardware restoration process covers what recapping involves if you want to bring one back yourself.

HuCard vs. CD-ROM²

PC Engine software comes in two formats:

  • HuCard: Credit-card sized cartridge. Compact, durable, easy to store. Most common format.
  • CD-ROM²: Compact discs requiring the CD attachment or a Duo system. Larger games with CD audio - but disc condition is critical. Disc rot on 30+ year old CDs is a real concern.

NOSTOS tests every PC Engine CD for full readability before purchase. If you are selling a collection and want to understand what that process looks like, see our year-round acquisition process.
