The eras are wide but they are dependable. A Union label alongside Made in U.S.A. places a piece in the earlier window, before production moved offshore. How Do You Date a Carhartt Jacket Without a Tag?

Care tags get cut out by the original owner, or they wash illegible after twenty years of job-site use, which is the normal state of the jackets worth owning. The garment still dates itself, just to a range rather than a month.

Work through the construction in this order:

1. Sizing convention. Numerical chest sizing (38, 40, 42) points to the J01 era. Alpha sizing (S, M, L) points to the J97 and later.

A jacket bracketed this way sells perfectly well, because the buyer who cares about the difference can read the same four tells from your photographs. Guessing a specific month you cannot support is the thing to avoid, since one confident wrong date undoes the credibility of everything else in the listing.

Does the Same Code Work on Carhartt Pants and Coveralls?

It does. The date code is a Carhartt care-label convention rather than a jacket feature, so bibs, coveralls, and double-front pants carry the same 3 or 4-digit sequence. The tag sits at a different place on each, usually along an interior side seam or inside the waistband rather than at the neck, so it is easy to conclude a garment has no code when it simply has one somewhere else. Check the full length of every interior seam before deciding the tag is gone.
